Reading lab: eight characters, one transparent calculation
This is a reproducible example from our own calendar engine, not a real person's case study or an independent accuracy certificate. Input: Gregorian 2000-01-01, 12:00, entered-clock convention, no location adjustment.

1 · Find the Day Master
Read the pairs in Year, Month, Day, Hour order: 己卯 · 丙子 · 戊午 · 戊午. The first character of the third pair is 戊. That is the Day Master; its primary element is Earth. It is not whichever element has the largest percentage.
2 · Count symbols, not personal qualities
The stems 己, 丙, 戊, 戊 contribute Earth, Fire, Earth, Earth. The branches 卯, 子, 午, 午 contribute Wood, Water, Fire, Fire. Totals: Wood 1, Fire 3, Earth 3, Metal 0, Water 1. Hidden stems and seasonal strength are not included. Metal 0 means no visible symbol received that label—not a deficiency in the person.
3 · Reconcile the displayed percentages
Divide each count by eight. The exact values are 12.5%, 37.5%, 37.5%, 0%, 12.5%. To show whole numbers summing to 100, we floor the values, then distribute the remaining points by fractional remainder, count, and the fixed Wood–Fire–Earth–Metal–Water order. The displayed result is 12%, 38%, 38%, 0%, 12%. A one-point rounding difference is not a meaningful difference in a person.
4 · Remove the hour and recount
Choose Unknown rather than guessing noon as your birth hour. The Hour pair is omitted. The six remaining symbols give counts 1, 2, 2, 0, 1 and displayed percentages 17%, 33%, 33%, 0%, 17%. The Day Master is still 戊 in this example. Noon is used provisionally for the other pillars, so this comparison is not a guarantee on solar-term boundary dates.
