The Year or Month pair differs
Check whether both tools accept a Gregorian date, and whether the year boundary is January 1, Lunar New Year, or spring commencement. For the month, compare the solar-term boundary rather than the numbered calendar month. A shared date label does not prove that both engines used the same clock convention.
The Day or Hour pair differs
Check the entered hour, date, timezone, and any daylight-saving or solar-time adjustment. This tool accepts whole hours only and uses the library's sect-2 Day convention; the late-Zi Hour convention is separate. Do not round a recorded time near a boundary and describe the result as exact.
The pairs match but the percentages differ
Ask what is being counted: six or eight visible characters, hidden stems, seasonal weights, or another weighting system. Compare raw counts before rounded percentages. Our ledger assigns one primary element to each visible character; it is not a full strength analysis.
The birth time is unknown
Use the 24-hour explorer to find sensitivity, not the most flattering result. Its samples are not probabilities and cannot recover a birth time. Keep the original record separate and consult an appropriate calendar source when a precise historical conversion matters.

How the Five Elements calculator works
The lunar-javascript calendar engine converts your date and optional whole hour to four stem–branch pairs. We read the Day Stem as the Day Master, then assign one primary element to each visible stem and branch. With an hour there are eight counted symbols; without an hour there are six. Largest-remainder rounding keeps the displayed percentages at 100%.
Worked example: 1 January 2000 at noon
The engine returns 己卯, 丙子, 戊午, 戊午. Visible symbols give Earth 38%, Fire 38%, Wood 12%, Water 12%, Metal 0%. The Day Stem 戊 is Earth even though another element can tie for the largest count. Day Master and most frequent element answer different questions.
Read a zero carefully
A zero means that no counted primary label belongs to that element. Hidden stems and seasonal strength are not included, so zero does not prove that an element is absent from a full chart. Do not interpret it as a deficiency, diagnosis, or instruction to buy a remedy.
When another calculator disagrees
First compare Gregorian versus lunar input, known versus unknown hour, day-boundary conventions, and timezone corrections. This tool uses the library's midnight Day Pillar convention and a provisional noon when the hour is unknown. Close to a solar-term transition, that assumption can also change Year or Month. Use the explorer to inspect sampled differences.
Common questions
Is the largest percentage my Day Master?
No. Your Day Master is the Day Stem. The percentages count the primary elements of all visible symbols.
Can I use a lunar birthday?
Convert it to the correct Gregorian date first, including the leap-month distinction. This form accepts Gregorian dates only.
Will my birthday be shared?
No birthday or hour is included in the share summary or tool link. You can preview the exact summary before choosing to copy or share it.
